High Performance Mindset Coaching

“We are all striving towards present moment mastery.” – ML

Welcome to the realm of high performance mindset coaching where we unlock potential. Working with elite level athletes as a strength and conditioning coach for the past eight years has given me the space to see how the best athletes in the world operate. All of these athletes have elite talent in some capacity. Working the past three seasons in AA with the Arizona Diamondbacks, it was evident to me that the majority of these players, at their best, are talented enough to be in the Show. Many of these players have service time in the MLB and many of these players end their time in baseball at the AA level. What is the difference between a career AA minor leaguer and a big leaguer? The mind. These players have crafted a world where they continuously grow. In order to grow one must free up the mind to access a greater potential. The mind is foundational. This is the area of human performance that is commonly accepted as the most important in baseball, yet is also the most misunderstood. The mind quite literally unlocks one’s physical capacity. My greatest strength is in guiding people to a greater access of the present moment. Herein lies the only place life exists. This is where high performance takes place. This will free your mind. Whether you’re an elite athlete or not, we are all striving towards greater access of freedom.

In order to free the mind, we must first understand where we “get locked up”. Below is a parable from David Foster Wallace’s Commencement speech at Kenyon College:

“There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”

A fish does not know it is in water until it is taken out. Similar, we humans do not know we have a voice in our head until we are told. Say the word YES 3x in your head. Yes, that is the voice. Our water is our inner world – our thoughts, our feelings, and our human experience. The only place we experience life is in the inner world and this place only exists in the present moment. Becoming familiar with our human experience allows us freedom to direct our subconscious mind (i.e. our body).

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” – Carl Jung. Let’s imagine that we all have a container of potential that we can tap into in this moment. It is perfect physics based off of every choice, behavior, habit, and action you have made from your past. You have conditioned this container of potential, which is your energy. This is your subconscious, which is below your level of thinking. Dr. Joe Dispenza says by the time we are thirty five years old that 95% of who we are is a set of automatic behaviors. The container of your energy is your body and your mind. The size of your container is dependent on the quality of your beliefs. A belief is something that you have accepted as truth and is formed from creating meaning from past events. Your energy takes its shape from these beliefs and is housed in the mind and the body. In the mind you have thoughts, and in the body you have feelings. Your thoughts and feelings create a state of being in the now. Your state of being gives you access to the amount of action you may take. The actions you repeatedly take create habits. Your habits reinforce your belief system. In every moment our thoughts, feelings, actions, and habits are conditioning our present and future self. We can live in a world where we suffer or we can live in a world where we are set free. Our mind has the choice in every moment. This is the realm of high performance.

“Once you know with absolute certainty that nothing can trouble you but your own imagination, you come to disregard your desires & fears, concepts & ideas, and live by truth alone.” – Maharaj
